Hey guys! This is the character for my graduation flick at New Bulgarian University, which unfortunately is still in a near initial state (I’m mean the short movie, not the university). I have already graduated though, but with another short I will be posting soon. The script of this one is 99% ready, the storyboard just as well, and of the two main chars this is the only one ready – but as a whole, I think the most difficult part is already done. This work is from the beginning of 2006, and I wanted to show it when the whole movie is done, but since I don’t have much time to work on it, it seems clear that there’s no sense to wait. The work pipeline I use is simple: Low poly modeling and UWV unwrap in 3D studio Max, Detail and textures in Zbrush and Photoshop, and mid poly with normal maps import in Max again. The render I use is naturally V-ray;)

In short, the whole idea of the movie is that bikers, aside from looking mean with all the sculls, black leather and spikes are actually nice normal people, that not everything that glitters is gold and vice versa – not everything that is gold, glitters. Bon Jovi has put it this way – Good guys don’t always wear white. So I’ve decided to name the character Bad for contrast. Here’s some more info about him:

Bad is a true old school biker. A lone wolf, he loves to ride alone – he doesn’t need anyone else. On his scarred face you can rarely see emotion – the one thing that changes his stone expression are the rare squeezing of the eyes, small movement of the heavy eyebrows as they drop even lower. He has the hardcore macho aura, and never, ever smiles. His passion for motorcycles, for the smell of gasoline and burning tire can only be compared to the love of leather clothes and sculls, with which he decorates every possible thing – starting from his bike, the belt, the boots, the tattoos, to the rings on his hands – he LOVES sculls. Looking mean, acting tough, inside he is truly a nice guy – but he never allows for others to know that. He is content with the world thinking that he is the “Bad and mean biker”. He doesn’t show that he cares about anything, and doesn’t let anything crack his stone cold attitude. He is the personification of the word Badass – if there is a Badass Biker Association, than Bad is its president.

The bike is far from finished, still untextured, and the sculls, where they exist are directly exported from Zbrush geometry. As a whole I really like how the bike turned out, it fits perfectly in the vision of the film I have – slightly exaggerated lines, scaled up detail so stuff looks smaller and realistic render and lighting. I had to put quite a bit of research so I can get the engine stuff right – you may think I know my way around motorcycles, but I can only ride one, not understand it and know what is what:) All I know is how to amputate it’s gas pump, which I’ve done on more than one occasion. Anyway, it was difficult to achieve that cause I wanted little detail, and still didn’t want to have the motorcycle feel not-real or not-ready-to-run.

Some more stuff I had in mind about the bike – these are excerpts of the pre-production of the project pages: Bad’s bike is just like him – gotten over his mid age, with a classic, old school appearance. A little dusty, with slightly darkened chrome – a true biker’s motorcycle, not the kind of bike a poser would ride on, but one for riding, one who has seen lots of lots of miles and will see times more. The bike is kept in the condition to work flawlessly, and about the outlook – well, Bad doesn’t care about that stuff. All covered with his favorite sculls, the bike is distinct and unique.

This is some part of the pre-production stage, so to say. Early sketches and concepts…

…backdrop projects and mood-setting whatchacallits…

…super early variants of the bike and detail studies…

…various ideas for tattoos, pins and patches.

The “Live fast – die young” tattoo is a nice touch, I think, since Bad is obviously not young and just as obviously still alive. The other tattoos I chose to use were “Old Skull” and the classic “Mum” heart. I also like how the “Badass Biker Association” patch turned out – a black ass (the donkey kind of) with evil red eyes riding a bicycle – stuff like that is rarely noticed, but I really love detail of this kind. I really hope that someday I will finish this movie, and I could use some help you know – so, if you by any chance want to be involved with this project drop me a line.

Click to watch the presentation flic I did to accompany my exam papers. Had to rener stuff in a hurry, so most renders use baked in textures, even reflections. The flic features some of the preproduction concepts as well as model presentation - rotation, details etc. The music is George Thorgood's "Bad to the bone" - the work in progres title of the movie.

This is a great character. You should definitely finish the short move. And if the animation is good as everything else is, it will be a masterpiece!

Absolutely phenomenal work, I know it’s a caricature but the end product was so good I thought it was a real model. I would love to help if I could, I do 3ds max modelling and some photoshop my family are bikers so I may be able to help. You can see some examples of my models at http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/316111 And http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/311234 Any reference material or thoughts on bikers let me know and I’ll be happy to help. Regards and keep up the excellent work.

looks great! this is a college lvl project? you are gonna do really well when you get into the industry. i have a quick question though: i notice that he is always posed with his arms up; how are you planning on making hischubby arms squish when he puts them down?

Thank you all, guys. Redeemer, that's a nice one...I guess the best way to do it is to cheat - since I have my storyboard cleared out more or less, there are just a few frames with his arms down, and I guess I can use a different model for these. I suck at rigging, but I think there may be another way - some of the modifiers supported mesh edit on different positons of the bones, i.e. I can edit the mesh on hands down, and everytime he lowes them there'll be an automatic morph. Anyway, its hard to do but not impossible
